Drinking water treatment is a matter of trust. Many people believe that the purpose of treatment is to turn poor water into good drinking water. Although this is possible in principle, in most instances it's not the case. Water treatment turns good water into even better water (e. g. as in the case of central softening or neutralisation), or water impurities such as iron, manganese or arsenic need to be removed from the groundwater or the content of natural organic matter (NOM) in lakewater must be reduced.
